PC games in general are not made for short gaming sessions in the way most console games are. Sure, there are plenty of hack 'n slash/action RPG games on consoles, but none of these are available on any other platform and are in my opinion much better games (if you're looking for longevity and endless gameplay) than say, Devil May Cry or God of War which are fine for short gaming bursts. This one is great for hack 'n slash newbies. Torchlight: Another Diablo clone, albeit a bit short and simple (almost like a console game). Not as smooth and a little less addictive. Titan Quest: Basically a Diablo 2 clone with better graphics in a Greek mythology setting. Diablo 2: This one has it all and all the other later action RPGs are basically carbon copies of this game, although some are decent games in their own right.

Diablo: THE action RPG/hack 'n slash game that started it all, although some gameplay mechanics are outdated by todays standards and could be frustrating to the newer gamers. There is also the Action RPG/Hack 'n slash genre which isn't as widely represented, but some are really great: The later games feature vehicles and extra game modes, but aren't necessarily better gameplay wise. No storyline here, just all out multiplayer warfare. Unreal Tournament: Finished what Quake started and popularized the FPS multiplayer arena subgenre. Crysis: Sick, sick graphics and system requirements, but features some of the best graphics you will see. Started out as a Half-Life mod, and went on to become its own game. Counter-Strike: Considered to be the most popular online multiplayer FPS of all time. Half-Life: The most immersive single player FPS experience ever. You need a beefed out rig to run SupCom 1 / 2 maxed. Like Total Annihilation and unlike Starcraft/C&C, these games feature huge armies of hundreds of units. Both are 3d with a fixed camera, which is nice if you're used to 2d RTS games. Supreme Commander 1 / 2: Spiritual followups of Total Annihilation. Total Annihilation: Not much focus on micro, but allows you to command hundreds (or thousands) of units and build lots of stuff.

The older games in the series are generally considered to be better than their 3d followups. Command & Conquer / Red Alert series: Not very micro/macro intensive, and more casual than Starcraft. Lots of fun custom maps available if you're bored. Warcraft 3: Very micro intensive, because of the focus on unit/hero abilities and the limited amount of units available to the player at any one time. Starcraft: Arguably the best and most balanced RTS game to date, although some people dislike it because of its micro/macro intensity. Warhammer Online and LOTR Online are alright, but are not as popular as the above.

Guild Wars (great for newbs and experts alike, although not a true MMO)

EVE Online (also not very beginner friendly) Lineage 2 (not as beginner friendly and streamlined as WoW) Out of those three genres there are several games that stand out from the crowd by about a mile, those are: With that out of the way, I'll go a little more in depth:īasically, the only genres of games that should be played on a PC are MMO, RTS and FPS (FPS is debatable, since some people prefer controllers over mouse+keyboard combo, although not all the FPS greats are available on consoles, see below).
